Branch; the experts in local government, community, hapu and iwi development, and the leaders of community grant funding.

The brief was to add a more strategic intent to the existing annual regional planning conferences.

Our approach was firstly to recognise that the best way to build on the existing planning conferences was not to run them ourselves, rather we worked directly with the managers and leaders inside the Branch to lead their own planning and thinking initiatives. What we did was to design a new process, and to develop specific guides with the managers. We then coached them through the process of facilitating to fruition. Here the leaders acted as consultants within their own organisation, and they did that with both creativity and robust thinking. Our job was not to change that, but to work in the background, to help them conceive a new process and then provide the tools and support they needed to take the regional conference sessions to a new strategic level.
